Malaysia currently has just under 1000 EV charging points across the nation, with the majority of them located around the Klang Valley, followed by major towns across the west coast of the peninsula. The nation has a national roadmap for EV charging stations where we are targeting to have about 10,000 charging stations by 2025, comprising 1,000 units direct current type and 9,000 units alternating current or slow charging. Malaysia’s Ministry of International Trade and Industry (Miti) aims to have 4,000 charging stations by the end of 2023. This is made possible with rapidly increasing momentum by major Charge Point Operator players such as Gentari, EV Connection, & ChargEV.
Malaysia Charge Point Operators (CPOs)
ChargEV
chargEV is currently Malaysia’s largest Charge Point Operator operating over 300 charging points nationwide. As at February 2023, they have a total of 359 charging points at 253 locations across the country. Previously only offering time based charging rates, they have now started introducing new locations that offer kWh based charging rates to EV owners.
Gentari
Gentari is a clean energy solutions company, wholly owned by PETRONAS, tasked to independently pursue and deliver integrated sustainable energy solutions.
Gentari’s ambition is to become a preferred green mobility solutions provider, supporting the EV ecosystem by capturing 10% market share across key markets across Asia Pacific, with an anchored presence in Malaysia and India.
Gentari kWh charging rates:
AC Charging (7kW, 11kW, 22kW) – RM0.90 per kWh
DC Charging (20kW, 30kW) – RM1.30 per kWh
DC Charging (50kW – 180kW) – RM1.50 per kWh
DC Charging (350kW) – RM1.70 per kWh
Gentari time-based charging rates:
AC Charging (All) – RM0.10 per min
DC Charging (20kW) – RM0.50 per min
DC Charging (30kW) – RM0.60 per min
DC Charging (50kW) – RM1.20 per min
DC Charging (60kW) – RM1.40 per min
DC Charging (20kW) – RM0.50 per min
DC Charging (180kW) – RM3.60 per min
In February 2-24, Gentari launched Gentari Go, a customer experience platform offering an integrated sustainable lifestyle by unifying Gentari’s clean energy ecosystem. Currently featuring green mobility and renewable energy solutions, Gentari Go is now activated in Malaysia with a regional rollout planned for Southeast Asia and India in 2024.
This experience will now transcend borders. Building on the initial roaming partnerships with EV Connection and ChargeEV which provide consumers access to over 70% of charging points in Malaysia, Gentari Go now empowers cross-border charging via the first EV Charging Corridor from Singapore to Thailand, in partnership with regional Charging Point Operators (CPOs) such as CDG Engie, City Energy Go and EVolt as well as charging point management with SOC2 & ISO12700-certified Virta. These partnerships enable access to over 2,000 chargers across Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. For consumers without an EV, the platform offers the option to rent an EV through its partnership with GoCar, thus helping consumers make the critical leap from Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles to Electric Vehicles (EV).
The Gentari Go app is available on the Apple App Store as well as the Google Play Store.

TNB Electron
TNB’s main role (as the primary electric utility company in Malaysia) is to ensure that their network is ready to support the increasing EV charging demand. They are the founding members of a coalition named Zero Emission Vehicle Association that help the industry players, especially the automotive industry as well as vehicle importers to come together and lobby for an EV-friendly policy with the government.
EV users can now use TNB Electron chargers as they travel along the North-South Highway & East Coast Expressway. Activation of the chargers are through GO TO-U mobile app.
TNB Electron Charging Rates:
- R&R Tapah Northbound : RM2.05/min (80kW) & RM 2.35/min (100kW)
- R&R Ayer Keroh Northbound : RM2.20/min (2 x 90kW)
- R&R Paka Northbound : RM 2.20/min (2 x 90kW)
TNB realized that the main parameter for EVs to take up is the charging points. Therefore, for some locations, TNB is working together with other partners to deploy EV chargers, both AC and DC.
