The BYD Auto Story

China’s BYD (Build Your Dreams) Auto is the world’s largest manufacturer of electric cars. It is number one not only in China, but also the largest market in the world outside of China. It has been expanding into other markets such as Brazil, Argentina, and Mexico. At the same time, it is also expanding its line of standard models to create more brand awareness in the U.S. This is no overnight sensation. BYD has been developing electric automobile technology since the 1990s, and has been successfully marketing electric cars since 2008. BYD has its own battery manufacturing facilities, as well. In addition, it has partnered with other companies, such as Tesla and Japan’s Panasonic, to supply batteries for use in their electric vehicles.

In 2021, BYD’s new energy vehicle operation footprint covered six continents, more than 70 countries and regions, and over 400 cities. It was the first Chinese auto brand to enter several developed markets such as Europe, the United States, Japan, and South Korea. In the same year, BYD Auto was ranked 20th in Shaanxi’s Top 100 Enterprises list released by Shaanxi Entrepreneurs Association. The company has been on the list consecutively for ten years.

BYD – Build Your Dreams

BYD stands for the “Build Your Dreams” slogan of the Chinese manufacturer. The company’s first products were telephone handsets, but in the 1990s it also began making batteries for a variety of applications. These included powering forklifts at warehouses and powering electric scooters used for short-distance deliveries. The company was also making batteries for use in electric cars, including its own models. As China’s market for environmentally friendly cars grew and government subsidies for the purchase of low-priced EVs increased, BYD’s production of electric cars also grew dramatically.
