Rivian Introduces R2, R3, and R3X models

Rivian’s new midsize SUV, the R2, is designed to deliver a blend of performance, capability, and utility for both adventurous outings and everyday use. Sporting a distinctive Rivian silhouette and face, the R2 features a powered rear glass that fully retracts into the liftgate, allowing for versatile gear-carrying options and a unique open-air driving experience. The interior is crafted for user-friendly functionality, featuring premium, sustainable materials that are easy to clean. Notably, the R2’s seating arrangement allows for complete flat folding of the first and second rows, accommodating gear, cargo, and even car camping needs.

In addition to the R2, Rivian introduces the R3, a midsize crossover that excels in performance, off-road capabilities, passenger comfort, and storage. The R3X, a performance variant of the R3, enhances dynamic abilities both on and off the road. Both models come with two battery size options, offering over 300 miles of range on a single charge for the larger pack and 0-60 mph acceleration in under 3 seconds for the quickest configuration.

I have never been more excited to launch new products – R2 and R3 are distinctly Rivian in terms of performance, capability, and usability, yet with pricing that makes them accessible to a lot of people

Rivian’s Founder and CEO, RJ Scaringe, expresses excitement about the launch, emphasizing the brand’s commitment to innovation, performance, and cost efficiency. Both the R2 and R3 are built on an all-new midsize vehicle platform, incorporating intelligent design elements such as high-pressure die castings and a structural battery unit for enhanced efficiency and reduced complexity. The models feature three motor variants, a structural battery utilizing advanced cell technology, fast charging capabilities, and enhanced autonomous features.

Rivian Introduces R2, R3, and R3X models - Highlights

Three Motor Variants: Leveraging Rivian’s in-house drive unit platform and technology, there will be Single-Motor (RWD), Dual-Motor (AWD), and Tri-Motor (two motors in rear and one in front) configurations, with the quickest configuration delivering 0-60 mph in under 3 seconds.

Structural Battery: Utilizes an all-new 4695 cell that offers significant improvements in energy density and output, estimated to deliver over 300 miles of range on a single charge for both R2 and R3.

Fast Charging: DC fast charging is compatible with both NACS (native) and CCS (with adapter), charging from 10% to 80% in less than 30 minutes.

Self Driving: Utilizing Rivian’s new perception stack featuring 11 cameras, five radars and a more powerful compute platform, R2 and R3 will provide dramatically enhanced autonomous capabilities.

Ever improving and expanding features: As with all Rivian vehicles, Rivian has developed its network architecture, topology of computers and associated full software platform to facilitate frequent software updates – the headroom for feature growth over time is extremely exciting.

Rivian places emphasis on affordability, with the R2 expected to start around $45,000 and the R3 priced below the R2, making Rivian’s electric vehicles more accessible to a broader audience. Reservations for the R2 can be made with a refundable deposit of $100, and deliveries are anticipated to commence in the first half of 2026. The R3 and R3X deliveries will follow the R2 launch.

Rivian plans to commence R2 production in its existing facility in Normal, Illinois, emphasizing a capital-efficient approach and leveraging its manufacturing and operations teams. This strategy aims to reduce risk, efficiently launch the R2, and expand total production capacity at the site to 215,000 units per year, while the Georgia plant remains integral to Rivian’s overall production scaling strategy.
