New Volvo EX30 – Its smallest SUV does the century sprint in 3.6s

by ElectricBlue

The all-new Volvo EX30 is the brands first small premium SUV, and expands their all-electric offerings to four models –  the XC40, C40, EX90 and now the EX30. As the market is rapidly moving towards full electrification, the EX30 will help Volvo capture growing demand for fully electric cars in a fast-growing segment. With its attractive pricing, starting from EUR 36,000, Volvo has been able to narrow the price delta between its internal combustion engine-powered equivalents and this EV model.

Volvo EX30

Volvo’s constant commitment to safety is evident in the advanced protective safety technology incorporated into their new small SUV. With state-of-the-art restraint technology and a meticulously designed structure, the company ensures that their vehicles meet rigorous in-house safety standards, preparing them for a wide range of real-world scenarios.

In addition to prioritizing safety, the EX30 aims to enhance the overall driving experience by offering cutting-edge technology and thoughtful Scandinavian interior design. Customers can choose from four distinct interior rooms, each with its own unique expression, while the cabin features intelligent storage solutions for added convenience.

The EX30 boasts a contextual single-screen user experience (UX) that integrates Google and runs the latest version of the company’s infotainment system. These features exemplify the essence of Volvo design and contribute to a more convenient, relaxing, and enjoyable driving environment.

Notably, the EX30 introduces a new generation of the popular Park Pilot Assist feature, representing the company’s commitment to cutting-edge technology. This advanced parking assistance system can handle various parking scenarios, including parallel, curved, perpendicular, and diagonal fishbone-style parking. It simplifies the process of parking in tight spaces by identifying available parking spots through its 3D user interface. Once the desired spot is selected, the feature takes control of the throttle, brake, and steering while the driver supervises the parking process. The screen provides visual feedback, displaying the distance to objects such as cars, walls, and bollards in either metric or imperial units.

We know that price and cost of ownership is still one of the biggest challenges when people consider switching to an electric car. With the Volvo EX30, we aim to bring premium, fully electric mobility to a much broader audience, helping to advance and speed up the transition to full electrification that our industry and society needs.
Jim Rowan, Volvo Chief Executive

The EX30 embodies all of Volvo’s design values in a smaller format. A long wheelbase, large wheels and equal overhangs bring balance and refinement to the exterior. It’s distinctly electric, with a confident face, closed shield and a digital rendition of the Thor’s Hammer headlights. Five vibrant exterior colours, from stylish Cloud Blue to bright and expressive Moss Yellow – the latter inspired by lichen growing on rocks along the Swedish west coast – give it character and personality.

Battery tech that suits your needs

Firstly, it should be noted that there is no such thing as a singular “battery” when referring to powertrains. Volvo provides customers with the freedom to select the battery technology that best suits their needs. This is exemplified in the EX30 model, which offers three powertrain options and two different battery types. This approach allows for an appealing entry price point for the EX30.

For individuals who predominantly drive in urban areas or cover shorter distances between charges, Volvo offers a single-motor option equipped with an LFP battery. The LFP standard-range battery utilizes lithium iron phosphate chemistry, providing a cost-effective and less resource-intensive production process. This option is particularly suitable for customers who prioritize affordability over maximum range.

On the other hand, for those seeking to maximize their driving range, the Single Motor Extended Range variant is the ideal choice. It comes equipped with an NMC extended-range battery. The NMC battery employs a combination of lithium, nickel, manganese, and cobalt, allowing for more efficient energy production compared to the LFP variant. With this configuration, drivers can enjoy a range of up to 480km between charges.

Lastly, for individuals who prioritize performance, the Twin Motor Performance variant is recommended. This variant combines the NMC battery with an additional second e-motor, resulting in an all-wheel drive configuration. The EX30 Twin Motor Performance variant boasts an impressive 315kW (428hp) power output, propelling the car from 0-100 km/h in just 3.6 seconds. Notably, this variant holds the title of the company’s fastest-accelerating car to date.

Another thing the EX30 does fast is charging. The extended-range Twin Motor variant has a charging capacity of up to 153kW, while the standard-range car has a capacity of 134kW. That means you can charge your battery from 10 to 80 per cent in a little over 25 minutes. Through the car’s centre display and app, you can set the amperage, maximum charging level and when you want to start charging.
