The all-electric BMW i5 debuts with an enhanced fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology, presenting two variants for drivers to choose from. First, the BMW i5 M60 xDrive (WLTP combined power consumption: 20.6 – 18.2 kWh/100 km or 62 miles) combines remarkable M performance with distinctive design elements. Featuring dual electric motors, it boasts an electric all-wheel drive and generates a system torque of up to 820 Nm (605 lb-ft) when utilizing M Sport Boost or the M Launch Control function. Accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in a swift 3.8 seconds, its top speed is electronically limited to 230 km/h (143 mph).

Additionally, the BMW i5 eDrive40 (WLTP combined power consumption: 18.9 – 15.9 kWh/100 km or 62 mph) is available, offering a rear-wheel-drive configuration. Its electric motor delivers a maximum output of 250 kW (340 hp) and a maximum torque of up to 430 Nm (317 lb-ft) when equipped with Sport Boost or Launch Control function. The BMW i5 eDrive40 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in a respectable 6.0 seconds, reaching a top speed of 193 km/h (120 mph).

Both variants feature a space-saving high-voltage battery positioned in the underbody, providing a usable energy content of 81.2 kWh. Alongside efficient electric motors, the latest adaptive recuperation system and an intelligent blend of heat pump technology for interior climate control contribute to the extended range capabilities. The respective WLTP ranges are estimated at 455 – 516 kilometers (282 – 320 miles) for the BMW i5 M60 xDrive and 497 – 582 kilometers (309 – 361 miles) for the BMW i5 eDrive40. Additionally, the new MAX RANGE function allows for a potential 25% range increase by limiting power and speed while deactivating non-essential comfort functions, when required.

Once again, the BMW 5 Series Sedan elevates its distinctive blend of sporting prowess and luxurious long-distance comfort in the new iteration. With the longest wheelbase in its upper mid-range vehicle segment, expanded track widths at the front and rear axles, a meticulously balanced 50:50 axle load distribution, intelligent lightweight construction, and enhanced body and chassis rigidity, its characteristic equilibrium is further enhanced.

The chassis technology has undergone extensive advancements, specifically tailored to the weight balance inherent in each drive technology. Standard features include direct wheel slip limitation, an integrated braking system, and sport steering with variable steering ratio. Optional additions encompass an M sport suspension, an M sport brake system, and the Adaptive Suspension Professional (standard in the BMW i5 M60 xDrive), which integrates electronically controlled shock absorbers, Integral Active Steering, and novel vertical dynamics management. For those seeking even more control, the optional Adaptive M Suspension Professional includes Active Roll Stabilisation with Active Roll Comfort.

Fully Vegan Interior - A first for BMW

Newly designed sports seats are standard equipment. The optional comfort seats offer a wide range of electrically operated adjustment options. The BMW i5 is the brand’s first model to feature a fully vegan interior as standard. This includes the surfaces of the seats, the dashboard and the door panels, as well as the steering wheel for the first time. The seat surfaces in the Veganza version with leather-like properties are also optionally available with a decorative perforation. Further optional equipment includes BMW Individual Merino leather upholstery in several bicolour variants.

BMW i5 with a unique gaming look

The BMW Group is partnering with the gaming platform AirConsole to bring a unique kind of in-car gaming to the road for the first time in the new BMW 5 Series. It allows the driver and passengers to play so-called casual games while the vehicle is stationary as a way of passing time while waiting for the vehicle to charge, for example.

For the in-car gaming experience, the players simply need their smartphone, which acts as a controller, and the BMW Curved Display. After starting the AirConsole app in the vehicle, the connection between the smartphone and the vehicle is intuitively established by scanning a QR code on the Curved Display. Then players can get straight down to playing. The AirConsole app supports multiple players simultaneously. The rear passengers can also participate in the in-car gaming fun during stops. In general, it is possible to play alone or with all vehicle occupants together or in competition mode.

With AirConsole, players can play so-called casual games. These are games that are easy to pick up and play and intuitive to control. The selection available for the market introduction of the new BMW 5 Series saloon includes racing, sports, quiz and music quiz games as well as simulation, strategy, jump-and-run and puzzle games. The 15 or so titles available to play from the start include “Go Kart Go”, “Golazo”, “Music Guess” and “Overcooked”. The portfolio of available games will be continually expanded.
