Toyota bZ4X Japan launch

Toyota bZ4X Japan launch delivers the BEV’s unique joy of driving and excitement for new possibilities.

Appealing and competent driving perfected through joint development with Subaru: Defying the conventional wisdom that electrified vehicles are tedious, and instead achieving smooth, intuitive driving performance and off-road performance of genuine SUVs

bZ4X will be the first Toyota vehicle to utilize the brand-new e-TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture) platform. Made specifically for Toyota electric vehicles, this structure allows for more space that you can feel in the cabin and provides a solid foundation for outstanding driving performance, ride comfort and stability for the road ahead.

Toyota bZ4X

The Toyota bZ4X is a SUV BEV jointly developed with Toyota’s partner, Subaru. This new vehicle adopts the e-TNGA BEV-dedicated platform that was jointly developed by the two companies; it takes advantage of the strength of Toyota, which boasts expertise in vehicle electrification, and Subaru, which possesses outstanding AWD technologies, and realizes driving performance that is both comfortable and enjoyable.

The characteristics of the Toyota bZ4X are outlined below:

  • Using a BEV-specific platform, the bZ4X combines a long wheelbase with a short overhang; this results both in a distinctive design, and in an interior space comparable to a D-segment sedan.
  • A uniquely shaped steering wheel eliminates the need to change grip when steering, and also contributes to a spacious interior; the vehicle adopts a steer-by-wire system that provides a smooth driving feel aligned with the driver’s intentions.
  • The low position of the instrument panel and the location of the meters above the steering wheel serve not only to enhance the vehicle’s sense of space, but also improve visibility and contribute to safe and secure driving.
  • The bZ4X adopts a new AWD system jointly developed by Toyota and Subaru; it combines safe and pleasing driving performance―made possible by the unique responsiveness of electrified vehicles―with an impressive off-road performance.
  • In addition to the use of regenerative energy systems, the vehicle also adopts a solar recharging system; this cleverly recharges the battery while stationary, and further enhances the unique environmental performance of a BEV. It also provides cruising range that ensures customers not to be inconvenienced in wintertime.

Toyota plans to produce the Toyota bZ4X in Japan and China; it hopes to begin worldwide sales of the model by the middle of 2022.

The Toyota bZ4X Japan launch coincides with innovative ownership options for Japanese consumers:

  • Leasing to eliminate customer concerns and contribute to achieving carbon neutrality (CN)
    • All vehicles will be available for lease to eliminate customer concerns regarding residual battery performance, BEV maintenance, and residual value. Also to contribute to the achievement of CN, battery management will be implemented for all vehicles by using batteries without waste through the 3Rs (Rebuild, Reuse, Recycle).
    • Provisions for individual customers will be through a bZ4X exclusive KINTO subscription service  plan.
    • A maximum 10-year term with guaranteed battery performance. Monthly payments decrease in stages starting from the fifth year with no early cancellation fees.
    • Connected service use and various other fees are included in the monthly fees.
    • Measures will also be taken to improve leased bZ4X vehicles in conjunction with technological innovations.

The concept is “Activity Hub”
Toyota is striving to achieve innovation in all areas including the interior, styling, driving sensation, and performance with the aim of creating exciting cars where all passengers can share an enjoyable time and space.

  • A BEV-dedicated platform, a first for Toyota, was developed with Subaru based on the e-TNGA philosophy to achieve attractive, smooth, intuitive driving performance, not just for a BEV, but for any car, as well as the off-road performance of an authentic SUV.
Pursuit of the safety and peace of mind of a BEV
  • The new bZ4X offers superior power efficiency performance (128 Wh/km) and sufficient cruising range for practical driving (559 km). In addition, development was conducted with a target of achieving a world-leading battery capacity retention ratio (90% after 10 years) in the pursuit of a BEV that can be used for an extended period with peace of mind.
  • In addition to seeking a high level of safety for the battery itself, Toyota Safety Sense, Toyota’s latest active safety package, as well as a body structure that can respond to collisions from all directions, a battery pack that contributes to ensuring protection performance in the event of a collision, and other safety features have been adopted in the pursuit of a BEV that can be driven with peace of mind.

Features

All-Wheel Drive With X-MODE

Whether helping you navigate through a downpour or hug the curves of a winding road, bZ4X’s available AWD capability gives you confidence to stay the course. And with the push of a button, X-MODE maximizes bZ4X’s AWD potential. By adjusting drive force, braking and throttle input, you’ll enjoy its impressive performance in tougher conditions.

Powerful Electric Motor

bZ4X takes advantage of an electric powertrain by delivering almost instantaneous torque to a drive that comes naturally. Front-wheel-drive models use one electric motor to produce 201 hp with 196 lb.-ft. of max torque, while all-wheel-drive models harness two electric motors to deliver 214 hp with 248 lb.-ft. of max torque to both axles combined.

Battery Performance

With an EPA-estimated driving range of up to 252 miles for front-wheel-drive models and up to 228 miles for all-wheel-drive models, you can enjoy the fun of electric driving with the confidence of knowing that it’s a Toyota.

Regenerative Braking With Boost Mode

The unique driving experience of bZ4X comes from the way it harnesses and delivers electric power. By optimizing the force used on the acceleration pedal, you can easily tap into bZ4X’s power. When you’re not on the accelerator, regenerative braking will recapture lost energy while coasting and help slow you down.
