Kia EV6 wins 2022 European Car of the Year awards

by Ian G

The EV6 obtained a first Car of the Year award for Kia. This innovative South Korean SUV reached the glory in a ceremony held today in Geneva, with 279 points and 12 individual top votes after a close battle with the Renault Mégane E-Tech Electric, second with 265 points, and the Hyundai Ioniq 5, in the third position with 261 points.

Kia has reinvented itself at the beginning of last year with a new name, new logo and new distinctive design philosophy named ‘Opposites United’. In fact, the EV6 was the very first vehicle launched under this new direction, and also is the first dedicated battery electric Kia vehicle based on its all-new Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP).

Built on an EV platform enables the Kia EV6 pleasant performance, AWD capability and ultra-fast charging times. It delivers up to an estimated 482 kilometers of all-electric range and vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality. Throughout the cabin, the Kia EV6 shows an unprecedented level of connectivity and safety, advanced driver assistance systems, besides a flat-floor interior with sustainable materials.

The heart of the Kia EV6 beats an energy-dense Nickel-Cobalt-Manganese battery pack, available in two sizes (58.0 kWh and 77.4 kWh). This low-mounted and underfloor pack delivers energy to both RWD and AWD electric engine layouts with varying horsepower at the front and rear axles. The EV6 offers various outputs ranging from 167 up to 576 horsepower (GT version).

Stiff competition from other shortlisted electric vehicles

From making the shortlist, the EV6 successfully fought off competition from the Hyundai IONIQ 5, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Škoda Enyaq iV, Cupra Born, Renault Mégane E-Tech and Peugeot 308 to be crowned 2022 European Car of the Year. It’s worth noting to EV fans out there that except for the Peugeot 308 (which is a plug-in hybrid), all the remaining 6 out of the 7 shortlisted cars are all-electric models.

Jason Jeong, President at Kia Europe, commented: “It’s a great honour to have won the 2022 European Car of the Year with the EV6, the first ever Kia to win this prestigious award. The EV6 is truly a landmark development that’s been designed from the outset to make electric mobility fun, convenient and accessible by combining a highly impressive real-world driving range, ultra-fast charging capabilities, a spacious high-tech interior and a truly rewarding driving experience. It is an exciting sign of what’s still to come in our evolving electrified line-up.”
